CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (March 17, 2026) – Royse + Brinkmeyer today announced the start of lease-up for

           The Pilot

, a new mixed-income residential community that will deliver 151 modern apartments, townhomes, and lofts to Champaign’s historic In-Town Neighborhood. Supported by a unique blended financing structure from PNC Bank, The Pilot includes five planned properties designed to expand workforce housing options in the city.

Champaign continues to see rising demand for moderate-income housing, driven by population growth, wage increases, and limited new supply. The Pilot offers expanded choices for residents – including those in the region’s “missing middle”, who earn too much to qualify for traditional affordability programs but still face increasing barriers in the rental market.

“The Pilot offers a meaningful solution for the missing middle - our educators, public-sector and healthcare workers, young families, and emerging professionals who are increasingly priced out of the communities where they work. R+B cares that their needs are met,” said Mike Royse, Majority Investor, Royse + Brinkmeyer. “We’re proud to deliver high-quality, attainable housing which reflects the needs of our community.”

Situated along South State and Prairie Streets, the three-acre development blends renovated historic assets with three new distinct residential concepts: Prairie Townhomes, Alley Lofts, and State Street Flats.

“As Champaign continues to grow, developments like The Pilot help ensure that the region remains competitive, vibrant and accessible,” said Brian Ray, PNC Regional President of central Illinois. “PNC is committed to expanding the types of lending and capital solutions needed to bring more workforce housing online and support our talent pipeline.”

provided financing through a combination of traditional lending and an equity-equivalent investment - an approach that could serve as a scalable model for future non–tax credit workforce housing developments.

“This financing structure demonstrates how innovative private-sector solutions can help fill the critical missing middle housing gap,” said Thurman Tony Smith, territory executive for PNC Community Development Banking.

This project supports the City of Champaign’s goal to increase housing units by 2035 as part of a broader strategy to address the region’s supply shortage. Statewide, Illinois faces an existing housing deficit of 142,000 housing units and will need to build an estimated 227,000 new homes by 2030 to meet demand, according to the Illinois Economic Policy Institute.

In partnership with Royse + Brinkmeyer and Catalyst Construction, the Champaign City Council approved a Planned Development in the fall of 2024, enabling a mix of housing types in the In-Town Neighborhood.

"The City of Champaign is excited to see the Royse + Brinkmeyer housing development nearing completion. The project team prioritized quality urban living while complementing the historic charm of the surrounding area. By balancing modern housing needs with the neighborhood's character, this development expands options for residents seeking housing near schools, parks, jobs, and the vibrant businesses in Downtown Champaign," said Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen.

Maximize Your Space!

Having a small space does not mean you have to feel cramped. Just follow these tips to make your space feel more open and spacious no matter how much square footage you have.

           TRASH IT OR CHERISH IT.

First, take some time to declutter your apartment and organize what you already have. You cannot create more space in your apartment unless you make that space by getting rid of some items. That pile of books in your corner that you have not even flipped through, maybe it’s time to let them go.

            LET’S GET ORGANIZED.

After you have downsized your belongings, it is time to get organized! If everything has a place to go then there will not be a giant monster of overflow invading your living space. If you are in a smaller space, you can utilize dividers in drawers, curio cabinets, or even boxes and bins. Vacuum storage bags are also a great trick for hidable storage – they take up less space, protect your items, and can be stored under your bed.

Bookshelves can hold pretty much everything; wire racks in the kitchen can free up cabinet space from kitchen utensils; and utilizing your walls not only for shelves but also to display some of your favorite items as well are great ways to both personalize your space and keep it organized!

Furniture pieces can serve way more than just one purpose! Try out a coffee table with plenty of drawers, an ottoman with a removable top, or even a bedframe with hidden storage. Get as creative with your organization as you would with decorating your space!

           USE AN ILLUSION

You can trick the eye into thinking you have a bigger space using bright colors and wall art.

Light colors on the walls reflect light and create an illusion of a bigger space. Luckily, Royse + Brinkmeyer always sticks to a neutral palette, a nice cream color. However, that does not mean you have to have boring plain walls. Utilizing tapestries or artwork in uniform colors is a wonderful way to spice up your walls without making your space feel small.

Another trick that can create depth, reflect light, and brighten up a room is utilizing mirrors on your walls.

We hope these tips can help you make your space, no matter how small, feel a little bit more spacious and welcoming. Make sure to let your creativity flourish and have fun!

           2022 Healey Gardens

We are just about ready for another year of gardening at the Healey Urban Gardens! Last year these gardens were built with the help of the U of I's Metropolitan Food Systems program and U of I Extension to give residents a way of growing their own food.

The garden has 29 beds, both raised and flat, a water spigot on the south end for watering, and a gate with bunny wire around the perimeter. There is also a compost bin available for residents and gardeners to use.

volunteer group of residents helped us design the gardens as well as develop rules for the garden:

Gardeners should only use the plot assigned to them.

Gardeners should prevent their plants from growing into paths, or other gardeners’ plots. They should also prevent plants from excessively shading neighboring plots.

Gardeners should not let weeds in their plot go to seed.

No one besides a gardener should interfere in that gardener’s plot, except with permission. Other exceptions are to remove weeds close to seeding or parts of plants spreading into paths or other plots.

Gardeners are welcome to have guests help with their plots

If a gardener does not want to maintain their plot any longer, they should contact Royse + Brinkmeyer and ask to relinquish their claim to the plot.

Gardeners should not harvest others’ produce without permission, even if that produce seems at risk of going bad.

Gardeners should return the shared tools to the area they got them from after use.

Gardeners should not store their personal tools in the public space.

Gardeners should check in with Royse + Brinkmeyer before applying any pesticides. The supervisor will ensure that the specific pesticide is safe and acceptable to the gardeners in nearby plots.

Gardeners should not leave watering systems on when they are not in the garden.

Gardeners should not use lights to work in the garden when the sun is down.

Mint should only be grown in containers like pots.

Smoking is not allowed in the garden.

Pets are not allowed in the garden.

Gardeners should wear masks and keep them six feet apart. The maximum capacity of the garden is 15 occupants: if the garden is full more people should not enter.

Plots are $30 for the season, we aim to build two more gardens in 2022 that will likely not open until the fall!

It's cold out there! While many of us take things like coats, hats, and scarves for granted, not everyone can afford to bundle up in the winter. For those of us that can, it can be wonderful to help those in need.

We want to help our residents help one another, so this year, we are collecting coats, gloves, hats, and scarves to give to residents who need them. We will be giving coats and cold weather gear to your neighbors in need and donating anything that is leftover to Unit 4's Warm-A-Kid Coat Drive or to Salt and Light.

If you or anyone in your family needs cold-weather gear we will try our best to match you up with any donated items we receive in your size. We have some sweaters, scarves, and coats in the office at the moment that need a good home!

Why Our Residents are THE BEST

Over the years we have been blown away by the generosity of our residents. Every November you donate a mountain of toys to

Toys for Tots, piles of cards for senior citizens living in care facilities, and when we asked you to sew masks for C-U Public Health, Christie Clinic, and Carle Foundation Hospital you delivered!

Since we know our residents are so giving, we want to help provide as many opportunities to support our community as we can.

Our Rent Credits Fundraiser is Back

Last year we decided to give every resident the opportunity to participate in

           C-U at Home's

annual fundraiser, One Winter Night, by offering $25 to either take as a credit towards rent or donate to C-U at Home and have us match it. We raised $15,650 for C-U at Home and gave $5,850 to residents. It was incredible witnessing the generosity of our residents, so we've decided to do it again!

           One Winter Night

Each February One Winter Night provides an opportunity for our community to learn about homelessness, raise awareness for our friends without an address, and experience a bit of what it might be like to be outside, overnight, in the coldest part of a Central Illinois winter. Participants commit to spending 12 hours outside in a cardboard box in downtown Champaign on the first Friday in February, as well as raising at least $1,000 to help C-U at Home continue doing all they do to help our community throughout the year.

If you are a Royse + Brinkmeyer resident, fill out this form to claim your credit and tell us whether you want to take the credit or donate it to C-U at Home. If you donate your credit to C-U at Home, we''ll match it. That's $50 towards supporting the most vulnerable in our community! If every Royse + Brinkmeyer resident donates, we will have helped fund a $75,000 donation to reduce homelessness!

If you aren't a R+B resident and want to donate, or just want to donate more than your credit, you can donate directly to C-U at Home here.

Each year the Toys for Tots program collects new and unwrapped toys and delivers them to underprivileged children. In 2020 the program distributed 53,509 toys to 5,544 children in Champaign County alone. Our residents blow us away every year by donating more and more toys for underprivileged kids.

This year was no exception, we were amazed to see the MOUNTAIN of donations that were packed up and given to the Salvation Army to deliver by Christmas. We counted 411 toys! We are so proud of our community for coming together and showing such generosity to those in need. It warms our hearts every year.

Spring is a busy time here at Royse + Brinkmeyer, it's renewal season! We love our residents and want to make sure that you get as many opportunities as possible to claim your apartment before we start marketing it to new renters. Last week we sent out notifications that renewal offers had been uploaded to everyone's Resident Portal. We're really excited to see whether our residents are going to renew, so we decided to add an extra incentive to renewing early. Over the next month and a half, we are giving SIX residents

Over the next few weeks, our staff will be working to get in touch with every resident and talk over renewal offers.

Starting this week we will visit each resident personally to answer any questions you might have regarding the online renewal process and your offer.
After that, we'll continue to reach out via phone, email, or both to check in. We don't want anyone to miss out on renewing their lease, so this may happen more than once.

Step 1- Accept Your Renewal Offer

Log into your Resident Portal. Once in your portal, you will see a red banner that reads: "You have a Lease Renewal Offer!" with two clickable links: "Review Offer"; and "Remind Me Later".

You may do either of the following:

Click the "Review Offer" link, and follow the prompts to accept your offer.

Click the "Remind Me Later" link, which will remove the red banner from your dashboard. You will still be able to access the offer by clicking on the "It's time to Renew" link under your Priority Alerts.

You have until 10:00 a.m. on March 15, 2021, to renew your lease. If your renewal is not completed by that time, your apartment could be rented.

Step 2- Sign Your Renewal Agreement

Once you have accepted your Renewal Offer, your Lease Renewal Agreement will be available for your digital signature within 72 hours. You will be notified via email when it is ready to be signed.

To digitally sign your renewal, you will do the following:

Log into your Resident Portal. Under the Priority Alerts Menu, click "Your Lease Is Ready" and follow the prompts. At this time, you will see clickable orange buttons. Click these buttons and follow the prompts to complete the process for the following:

Once the documents are signed, you will be prompted to exit the lease.

Note: If you have multiple persons on your lease or a co-signer, they must also sign the Lease Renewal Agreement to secure your apartment for another year.

In March, we asked residents to donate masks in exchange for rent credits. The response was overwhelming! We were able to donate over 1000 masks to C-U at Home, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, Christie Clinic, and Carle Foundation Hospital. That’s pretty awesome.

And, as though that wouldn’t be enough, this month we asked for donations for our annual Toys for Tots drive. Once again, residents delivered! This photo is JUST the main leasing office; there are even more at our satellite offices! One lucky resident, Lauren from State St., won one month's free rent in our raffle!

When we asked residents to donate holiday cards for senior citizens living in care facilities we received over 250 cards! We also gave away some prizes for those:

Most cards donated: Gary from Crowwood Pointe! Gary donated 65 cards and won a $50 Walmart gift card!

Most Creative Card: Jade from Ginger Creek donated the most creative card and won a $25 Meijer gift card!

Raffle: Jennifer from Misty Cove won our early donation raffle and won a $15 Schnucks gift card.

We also offered rent credits this month to help alleviate some of the strain of the pandemic but gave residents the choice to, instead, donate their credit to C-U at Home and have Royse + Brinkmeyer match it. You raised $15,500 to help support our communities’ homeless!

We are so proud of our community and grateful to have such wonderful and giving residents. So, THANK YOU for being a bright spot in a difficult year. We couldn’t ask for better.

Last week our friends at the U of I taught us how to grow herbs indoors. Now they’re back with some tasty recipes to try using those freshly grown herbs!

They’ll also teach you some handy herb/vegetable pairings, how to convert recipes calling for dry herbs to fresh herbs, and how to tell if your herbs are old.
According to the U of I Extension, you will typically need 3x the amount of fresh herbs as you do dry. For example, a recipe calling for 1 teaspoon of dried parsley would need 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley.

2 1/4 lbs Roma tomatoes and 1 1/4 lbs Cherry tomatoes

            4 1/2 Tbsp olive oil

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

8 cloves garlic, peeled and left whole

2 small yellow onions, sliced just under 1/2-inch thick

2 cups (32g) lightly packed fresh basil leaves

            4 – 5 cups low-sodium vegetable broth

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place tomatoes on a rimmed baking sheet and toss with 3 Tbsp olive oil then season with salt and pepper (place Roma halves cut side upright).

Place onion slices and garlic on a rimmed half sheet and toss brush with remaining 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil on all sides, sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Place baking sheet with tomatoes and half sheet with onions in the oven side by side and roast onions 30 - 35 minutes until edges are golden, and tomatoes 40 - 45 minutes until golden.

Peel away any burnt papery layers of onions if there are any. Pull peels from tomatoes.

Pour onions and tomatoes into a large pot. Add 4 cups vegetable broth and the basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

vegetable broth to thin as desired.

Blend soup with an immersion blender or in small batches in a blender (only fill blender half full and remove center insert and cover with a kitchen towel). Serve warm topped with grilled cheese croutons if desired.

            1 tsp dried thyme

            1 tsp dried parsley

            1 tbsp fresh oregano

Add 1 1/2 tablespoon oil to a large skillet. Heat on medium high. Once the pan is hot, add your chicken. Salt and pepper. Sauté for 3 to 4 minutes uncovered, flipping occasionally. Chicken should have some browning but should not be cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the skillet. Now add potatoes and saute, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until outside of potatoes are browned. Potatoes shouldn't be cooked through quite yet.

Reduce heat to medium. Add chicken back to skillet along with the chicken stock, lemon juice, and minced garlic. Sprinkle with salt, onion powder, dried thyme, and dried parsley. Stir. Cover. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes or until potatoes and chicken are cooked through.

Taste. Add more salt or lemon juice if desired. Stir in fresh oregano and serve.

Add the parsley, oregano, olive oil, chili pepper and lime juice or vinegar to the bowl of a food processor or blender. Process until combined and smooth to your liking. (Alternatively use a sharp knife and chop the herbs on a cutting board)

Transfer the sauce to a bowl or a jar and stir in the grated garlic and red pepper flakes. Season to your taste with the sea salt and more lime.

If you are starting the herbs from seeds, then you will need some shallow containers for easier germination. One easy and economical example would be old cardboard egg cartons!

           Potting Mix
You’ll also need some potting mix. There are several types of potting mixes. The two you are most likely to use would be a generic mix, like Miracle Grow, or a cactus mix. Generic potting mix is a good soil mix that holds moisture well, but not all plants/herbs want a lot of moisture. Cactus potting mixes are better for low moisture plants because they are made up of soil, perlite, and peat moss. This mixture of materials increases water drainage and prevents soil from compacting. You can also make your own by mixing a “regular” Miracle Grow with sand, perlite, or peat moss on your own!

Starting your Seeds: The Egg Carton Method

To begin, fill the egg carton loosely with the necessary potting mix and mist the soil so that it’s moist.

Carefully place 1-2 seeds in each dimple of the egg carton and mist again.

Cover very lightly with more potting mix and mist one last time.

Place the egg carton in a place where it will get around 4 hours of sunlight per day.

It should take around 2 weeks for the herbs to germinate. Eight to ten weeks after the seeds have sprouted, they can be transplanted into a bigger container. All of the seedlings for one type of herb can be moved to the same container. A 5-6” wide container will be a perfect new home for your new plant “babies”.

What are the easiest Herbs to grow?

Lots of herbs can easily be grown inside. For example, basil, chives, mint, oregano, parsley, and thyme are super convenient to grow inside because they are easy to pick. Any herb can be grown inside, but to make things easier for you make sure that the herb(s) you choose will have access to adequate sunlight and are easy to pick.

           Oregano

6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day
Oregano should have 6-8 hours of direct sunlight and be kept around room temperature (72 degrees). Oregano prefers to be in a potting mix that drains well, so a Cactus mix will be perfect for Oregano. Oregano can get root rot very easily so make sure to only water once a week when the soil is completely dry. This herb is ready to be harvested when it reaches 6” in height. When you harvest, make sure you leave 2” at the bottom to ensure continued growth.

           Basil

6 hours of sunlight per day
Basil grows best when it has 6 hours of sunlight and is kept at room temperature. Basil should be potted in either a regular potting mix or a mixture of 50% Cactus potting mix/50% compost. The compost will act as a fertilizer to provide the necessary nutrients for your herbs, but other fertilizers can work as well. Make sure to continually add compost or another fertilizer to the pot to give the basil the nutrients it needs. Keep the soil moist by watering once a week. To keep Basil growing the best, you should pinch the flowers off as they appear. The newer the leaves, the more flavor they will have.

           Thyme

6 hours of direct sunlight per day
Thyme also likes to have 6 hours of direct sunlight and a temperature around 71 degrees. Thyme prefers to have dry, well-drained soil, so a Cactus mix would be great. Water once a week or when the soil is super dry. Thyme is pretty resilient and if you forget to water it every once-in-awhile, it should be fine. To harvest thyme, wait until it reaches 6” tall and cut the foliage as needed leaving 3” at the bottom.

           Parsley

4-6 hours of direct sunlight
Parsley grows best in 4-6 hours of direct sunlight at room temperature. Any regular “all-purpose” potting mix will work. Make sure to water 1-2 times a week when the top few inches of the soil feels dry. For harvesting purposes, wait until the plant is 6” tall and cut the stems 2” from the base of the parsley.

           Chives

4-6 hours of direct sunlight
Chives, just like Parsley, grow best in 4-6 hours of direct sunlight, at room temperature. Any regular “all-purpose” potting mix will work. Make sure to water 1-2 times a week when the top few inches of the soil feels dry. For harvesting purposes, wait until the plant is 6” tall and cut leaves as you see fit. Make sure to leave 2” at the bottom that you don’t harvest.

           How to Harvest Herbs

When harvesting herbs, you need to be careful to not over harvest. Harvesting too much of the plant at a time can be stressful to the herb and it won’t continue to grow. For the majority of herbs, you want to leave the bottom 2” of the plant unharvested to promote new growth, and keep it from becoming overstressed!

So we are giving residents the option to donate their credit to support C-U at Home and their mission of serving the most vulnerable homeless in our community. For every credit donated to C-U at Home Royse and Brinkmeyer will match with another $25 donation! These funds will help support C-U at Home through their upcoming event, "One Winter Night".

Winter weather is quickly approaching and work on our Urban Farm project at 611 W. Healey is on hold until the spring, so we thought now would be the perfect time for a progress update!

In October we hosted a small group of resident volunteers to give us feedback on the direction of the farm so far. We put together these visuals to to give an idea of where the project is heading, and the University of Illinois Extension gave a talk on how to use the new compost bins!

The currently proposed layout includes 9 6’x9’ ground level plots and 4 raised 3’x15’ plots that would probably be split into 8 to accommodate 17 gardeners. The lot would also include a community gathering area, open to all residents, that includes a fire pit, tables and chairs, and a pergola. We also hope to include an outdoor kitchen space.

Residents agreed that this might create a privacy concern for the first floor residents at 609 W. Healey. So we included a vined trellace on the east side of the community area and their windows. Last month, we planted shrubs along the east side of the garden area, as you can see below.

We hope to begin construction on this project in the spring. We’re so excited to be able to bring this amenity to our residents. Anyone with feedback or questions (we love to hear them!) can comment on this post below!

           Going Out of Town?

If you’re leaving town, there are a few things you need to do to ensure your home stays safe:

           1. Tell Royse + Brinkmeyer

It may not seem necessary, but if you let us know you are leaving town, then we know to check on your unit for leaks, frozen pipes, or other potential issues while you’re away.

It’s easy! Simply complete a Notice of Absence form or give us a call. You can find the Notice of Absence form in your resident portal, under important links!

           2. Set heat no lower than 60 degrees

It may be tempting to turn off the heat and save on your heating bill while you’re away, but this is extremely risky in cold weather. The plumbing in your building relies on the heat from your unit to keep from freezing. Frozen pipes are bad news for everyone involved! Another step you can take to prevent frozen pipes is to leave cabinets that contain plumbing open, this will allow warm air to circulate.

           3. Leave faucets on a drip

Midwestern winters are no joke. Another way to keep your pipes safe is to leave your faucets on a slight drip to keep the water flowing.

           4. Have a friend (or

Nobody wants to come home to an overflowing mailbox (least of all your neighbors)! So have a friend stop by periodically to collect it for you.

Don’t abandon the plants! Make sure you don’t come home to brown leaves by making sure your plants are visited regularly!

           6. Lock your Windows and Doors

This one may seem silly, but you would be surprised how often it gets missed. And please make sure your windows are closed and secured before you leave!

And finally, enjoy your trip! We’ll have things covered here!

If you live in our buildings near downtown, you may have seen our shiny new compost bin at 611 W. Healey! We are super excited to be able to offer this new amenity to residents. But what is composting and what do you need to do to participate?

           What is Composting?

Composting is a method of or recycling organic matter (like leaves) and food scraps into a fertilizer that is beneficial for plants. It’s a great way to reduce your households’ impact on the environment by both reducing landfill waste and limiting methane gas!

It sounds complicated, but it is a fairly simple process of layering compostable kitchen scraps and grass clippings (greens) and organic matter such as dead leaves or pine needles (browns).

           How Can I Compost?

Composting is a pretty simple process. Unless you live at 609 W. Healey you probably don’t want to have to run out to the bin every time you generate food scraps. You probably want to invest in a countertop compost bin, which can store a few days worth of scraps at a time without attracting bugs or smelling up your space.

Once you have that you can begin collecting scraps. Not every kitchen scrap is compostable. You’ll want to

to make sure you’re not including anything that won’t decay properly. Things like meat and dairy can cause a smell and attract pests.

Once you’ve got a few days worth of scraps saved up it’s time to take them to the bin! All you need to do is dump them in and make sure you add a layer of browns and greens to make sure everything decomposes properly. We recommend topping your kitchen scraps off with a handful of dead leaves or pine needles that can be found around the property, or even some of your recycling (just be careful that you don’t add anything that is not supposed to be in there.) You can see a list of some common browns and greens below:

Brown materials for composting include dry or woody plant material. In most cases, these materials are brown, or naturally turn brown:
Green materials for composting consist mostly of wet or recently growing materials. Green materials are usually green or come from plants that were green at some point. But this is not always the case.

           The Ratio

Maintaining a proper ratio for the compost bin is what allows everything to decompose without causing a smell. If the bin begins to smell you should call or email Royse + Brinkmeyer so we can address the problem.

Generally, a ratio of three- or four-parts browns to one-part greens is great, but you do not need to be exact about it.

If we do not get a good mix of brown and green materials, the compost pile may not heat up, may take forever to breakdown, and may start stinking up the place. These issues can usually be remedied easily by tweaking the ratio.

If you find that your compost pile is not heating up, then you may need to add more green material to the compost. If you find that the compost pile is starting to smell, we may need to add more browns.

           And that’s it!

In the end, decomposition happens. It is a natural process. Pile your compostables, turn them (or not), and in time, we will have compost. It really is that simple.

. The project is in the early design stages currently, but we thought now might be a good time to explain what an urban farm is and why we’re interested in building one!

           What Is an Urban Farm?

An urban farm is any piece of land gardened by a group of people, using either individual or shared plots on private or public land. Urban farms may be found in neighborhoods, schools, connected to institutions such as hospitals, and on residential housing grounds. The idea is to provide space for farming and gardening in areas where access to those activities may be limited.

What Is the Purpose of an Urban Farm?

The purpose of an urban farm can vary greatly and is defined by the community members that the garden is meant to serve. The garden may provide a space otherwise unavailable to community members to grow food, flowers, and herbs. It may be used as a way to build or revitalize a sense of community among neighbors or reconnect with nature. Other goals of a community garden can include: educating youth and adults about growing food and associated food system topics (eg. nutrition, health); job and entrepreneurial training in the food sector; improving food access to fresh vegetables and fruits; or therapy gardens.

Why Are We Building an Urban Farm?

We would like to provide our residents the space, platform, and knowledge to grow their own food, flowers, or herbs at home as well as create a shared community space for people to come together and get to know one another.

We believe that your apartment is more than a temporary rental space – it’s your home. And we want to make living in that home, and being a part of our community, the best experience it can be. We know that one of the major pitfalls of apartment living is the lack of personal outdoor space to garden in, so we’re creating one!

We also want to help our residents feel more a part of our community. We believe this not only enhances your life but the community as a whole! This project allows us to engage residents and get them involved with local organizations like the University of Illinois and the U of I Extension in a unique and personal way.

In addition to all of the great benefits above this project also allows our residents to engage with a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle through composting and rain collection!

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of ACES and the U of I Extension have the knowledge and skills necessary to help plan and implement the garden in as well as provide opportunities for residents to learn more about gardening, composting, and more! We hope to have them doing regular demonstrations and seminars on site once the space is built.

We are building a composting center in the empty lot at 611 W. Healey, so we thought we should share some information about composting. We are newbies to this process, as are many of our residents, so we got some help from the

           What is compost?

Compost is organic material (typically food scraps and green waste like grass clippings, leaves, sticks, etc.) that is used as a soil amendment. It can be made from material you already have on hand, especially kitchen scraps. It is an alternative to traditional soil amendments like fertilizer and is safe to use on both edible and non-edible plants.

           Why is composting so important?

Typically, food and other natural materials that are thrown in garbage cans and landfills get mixed up with other garbage such as plastic, metal, etc. and do not break down effectively. This decomposing material releases methane gas, which is 30x more powerful than carbon dioxide in contributing to climate change. When you compost the material instead you transform it into a valuable resource instead of waste.

           How do I compost?

There are many ways to participate in composting, and some are more suitable than others depending on your living situation:

If you live in a small space without access to and outdoor area, you may wish to participate in a compost collection service, in which people pick up food and yard scraps from your home. Inquire at your municipality to see if this is an option.

If you live in a small space and have house plants you would like to fertilize with compost a small worm bin or vermicomposting may be right for you.

If you have backyard space and wish to build a compost bin or compost pile, there are options for that as well.

Soon, If you are a Royse + Brinkmeyer resident who lives near 611 W. Healey you can add your compostable materials to the compost bin there! The bin is currently being built and should be ready for use in early fall.

           What exactly is “compostable material”?
